International Center for Not-for-Profit Law |
Washington, DC |
www.icnl.org |
The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) seeks bright, energetic students with an interest in international affairs to serve as interns. ICNL's internship offers a unique opportunity to be involved in the promotion of an enabling legal environment for civil society, freedom of association, and public participation around the world.
ICNL has worked on civil society law in over 90 countries, drawing upon a worldwide network of partners and experts. Working with ICNL’s program teams, interns are engaged in our cutting-edge research and technical assistance. ICNL endeavors to develop projects that reflect student interests and skills, and to assist with the student's career development. Past summer interns have completed the following projects:
-- An ICNL intern interested in Albania provided technical assistance to a working group comprised of an Albanian Supreme Court Justice, government officials and NGO leaders working on new NGO legislation. The intern’s advice was reflected in legislation enacted by the Albanian Parliament.
-- Working with ICNL’s President, an intern co-authored a survey on NGO legislation throughout Central and Eastern Europe. This survey was then published and disseminated throughout Europe and Eurasia.
-- In Turkey, the European Union (EU) identified NGO legislation as a primary human rights issue affecting accession. The EU, government, and NGO sector requested that ICNL provide technical assistance on a new associations’ law. One of ICNL’s interns was able to play an instrumental role in the reform of the legislation, which led to Turkey's enactment of a new law on associations.
-- Most recently, ICNL hosted an intern interested in civil society issues in the Middle East. This intern prepared a survey of legislation in the region that was published in the International Journal for Not-for-Profit Law. Now full-time with ICNL, this individual has assisted with conference sessions in Amman, Jordan, and is working closely with a Program Director to develop ICNL programs and capacity-building initiatives throughout this region.
QUALIFICATIONS
Interns should be enrolled in an accredited law school. Good research, writing, and analytical skills are particularly important qualifications for this position. Foreign language skills a plus.
TERMS
Students are expected to work full time for at least 10 weeks on the internship during the summer (approximately May – August). Interns are also welcome for the fall and spring semesters, though the projects may be more short-term. ICNL will gladly provide recommendations for housing and support with academic credit programs.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Interested candidates should apply by submitting a resume, writing sample, and a cover letter to: Human Resources at hr@icnl.org. Please apply 4-8 weeks before ideal internship starting date. |

National Level Organization working for the Indigenous People in India. A very special exposure and chance to become acquainted with the Indigenous Justice System at the grass root level through customary law practices. In India, after a long social struggle, legal recognition has been given to customary law practices in the Indigenous areas (below the appellate level). Climate and language challenges, but a special experience.
It would be a good experience for someone who is interested in the practice of Customary Law in specific Communites. While documenting and articulating the possible experiences and documentation exposures; we could think of the following Four Areas :-
Documentation And Research on available Studies/Data.
Experience of Informal Courts and proceedings thereof in Indigenous areas.
Implementation of the Decisions taken under Customary Law.
Study of the "Twilight Zone" between the Jurisdiction of the Traditional Institutions and the Formal Legal System, based on the Law of the Land.
The following points would be some of the indicators for prospective interns:
Basic knowledge of Law and Legal Practices.
Specific Common/Customary Law Practices for special Communities.
Working Knowledge of Hindi, as we are thinking of placing the Interns in India; in a Tribal State in Central India. We would prefer if Two Students (A male and a female student) could be placed together for Community based Communication links and dialogues. |
